The town's name is derived from the saxon for seven oak trees near a chapel. There are actually nine oaks now, since the storm of 1987 (and vandals subsequently) destroyed the seven which were growing here. One of the largest houses in England is built here - Knole House - from the late 15th century, it is said to be a calendar house, as it has 365 rooms.
